It has been discovered that sugar and sweeteners are very toxic for the body. It has been proposed to regulate them as strictly as alcohol.
Foods with High Added Sugar Should Be Banned
The researchers have stated that all the food and drinks which contain added sugar should be taxed. Also, they should not be sold near schools, and they should have an age limit on purchase.
Even if the idea sounds absurd, the researchers have numerous evidences which indicate the fact that sugar, glucose, fructose, or sucrose, which is a mixture of the two, are very dangerous for the human health.
In the United States of America, more than two thirds of the population is overweight. 50 percent of those people are obese. It has been stated that 80 percent of the obese people will have diabetes, or will suffer from other illnesses which will put their lives in danger.
75 percent of the money spent by the health-care in the United States of America are spent on weight related diseases.
According to the World Health Organization, the number of the obese people worldwide is higher than the number of undernourished people in the world. According to the United Nations, for the first time in history, the diseases caused by weight problems, such as diabetes, heart related ones, and some forms of cancers, cause more deaths than infectious diseases.
The role of sugar in the obesity problem is unknown. Back in time, sugar, the one obtained from fruits, was available only a few months each year, when the fruits were harvested. Honey, which was another natural source of sugar, was not easy to obtain, so people were lucky when they were able to consume it.
Too Many Calories Consumed From Extra Sugar
Nowadays, sugar can be found in numerous food items, from soups to bread, to sodas. Each day, Americans consume on average more than 600 calories which comes from added sugar. It is as if they consume 40 teaspoons of sugar per day. The researchers have stated that nature made sugar very hard to get, but people made it very easy to obtain.
Some researchers have stated that when sugar is consumed in excess, it becomes toxic. The problem is that the glucose which comes from complex carbohydrates is metabolized by the body in a safe manner.
The fructose on the other hand, is metabolized by the liver, and in time, the liver takes lots of damage. This constant damage could lead to diabetes and other problems such as obesity.
The added sugar is even more dangerous, because it deals a bigger damage to the liver. The reason for that is the fact that it goes strictly to the liver. Some have stated that sugar is just as addictive as alcohol and tobacco are.
They also stated that it is toxic, and that it has a negative effect on the society.
