A group of researchers from the Ohio State University discovered the fact that Omega-3 consumption helps people get rid of anxiety. It is also a well-known fact that Omega-3 has the potential of reducing inflammation.
Omega-3 Reduces Anxiety
According to the researchers, a diet high in Omega-3 has the potential of reducing certain conditions. The study was made in order to discover the way in which stress influences the immune system. Everything started 3 decades ago, when the researchers wanted to see the effects of the omega-3 on the human body.
Omega-3 is full of polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic, and docosahexaenoic acid. The early studies have revealed the fact that omega-e has the potential of reducing inflammation, as they reduce the cytokines levels in the body. It has also been discovered that omega-3 could reduce the effects of depression.
It is a known fact that cytokine production in the body is increased when one experiences psychological stress. Because of this, the researchers wanted to see if the omega-3 fatty acids could reduce anxiety levels.
The researchers used medical subjects for their experiment, because in the majority of the cases, the medical students are much stressed. Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, Ph.D., professor of psychology and psychiatry, who participated to the experiment, stated that one group received the omega-3 acids, whereas the other group received a placebo. They hoped that the ones who received the omega-3 would feel less anxious.
68 students participated to the study, being divided into 6 groups. Each of the participants was interviewed six times. During the course of the study they were asked to take some psychological surveys which would help the researchers determine the anxiety and depression levels of the participants.
They also had to mention their diet, and provide a blood sample. The amount of omega-3 acids people receives was four or five times the amount of fish oil people would obtain from a meal.
Too Much Omega-3 Could Be Harmful
The researchers had some problems during the study, because during the exam period, the students weren’t stressed at all, and the researchers hoped that they would be.
They weren’t anxious, and they were able to sleep in the proper manner. Even so, the researchers discovered that students, who received the omega-3 fatty acids, experienced a 20 percent decrease in anxiety levels, whereas the ones, who did not take the omega-3, maintained the same level of anxiety. The blood samples confirmed the same thing.
The researchers stated that it would be unwise for people to start a diet full in omega-3 because they do not know if an excessive amount of omega-3 has any side effects on the health.
A further research is required in order to see the full effects which the omega-3 fatty acids have on the body.
