Community and Caregiving

The people in the United States of America are living longer and they stay in their homes for a longer period of time and this is the main reason for which the sense of community has become quite intense. Little communities are quite popular in the United States, as there are people all over the place who simply help their neighbors out. Therefore, the connections made last for a long period of time.

If you live in a little neighborhood, where everybody knows each other, you probably know that there are a few people in your community who simply love helping other people out. Usually, this is the task of middle aged people, who are more interested in helping older people than anyone else. They spend their time helping people carry their groceries from the car to the house or simply rake the leaves in an old couple’s garden. Regardless of the job done, it is clearer and clearer that middle aged people take their longevity from the happiness and satisfaction of helping others.

How important a “Hello” can be

Although there are many people who help other people in their community out with several different things, there are a few things they should know. For instance, it is widely known that people need attention, especially when they are older. Given that families are smaller and smaller, the burden of caregiving usually falls in fewer family members, who do not even have the time to come and spend too much moments with their families.

This is the moment when the people in the community should step in. What most people may not know is how important saying “Hi” to someone can be. Although you may be helping older folks out, it is not enough. Saying hello is as important as spending a lot of time with them or as checking in. Older people are usually easily pleased and the power of hello is quite incredible.

Know when to say yes and no

There are many things an older neighbor could ask you to help him with. If they ask you to take them to a doctor’s appointment or to go to the grocery to buy some things, you can say yes. However, if they go as far as to ask you to sign their checks, for instance, you should say no. aside of the fact that it is on the border of being illegal, it is also unhealthy for your neighbor. Therefore, knowing when to say no is quite important.

On the other hand, if your neighbor asks you to become their medical proxy or power of attorney, you should understand first of all the incredible responsibility you would be taking on. Being someone’s health care proxy is quite an important thing and it usually involves many things. Therefore, you should really take into account every aspect of this issue. Of course, helping your neighbors makes you a more satisfied person, it makes you better, but it can also be a burden at times and you need to make sure you are ready to take all this on before you say yes.
