The pharyngitis or sore throat is very common. In the majority of the cases it is caused by an infection which takes place in the throat. The only symptom may be soreness in the throat, but there are cases when the voice deepens, fever and sickness feeling occurs.
Sometimes the glands in the neck get swollen. Usually, one will have difficulty swallowing. The soreness gets worse in 2 or 3 days, but it goes away in one week. In 1 in 10 cases, the soreness lasts for more than 1 week.
Another common throat problem is the tonsillitis, which is an infection of the tonsils at the back of the mouth. The symptoms are similar to the ones of a sore throat, but more severe. Fever will take place, and one will feel much worse with tonsillitis than with sore throat. Puss might develop on the tonsils, and the condition might last for 1 or 2 weeks.
What are the Treatment Methods?
There are treatment methods for both sore throat and tonsillitis. In some of the cases, the best thing you could do is to leave it alone, as the sore throat will be fine in days.
You should consume lots of drinks, even if you have difficulties swallowing. In case you get dehydrated, you will feel more tire and you will experience bigger headaches. You could take ibuprofen or paracetamol, in order to take care of the pain and of the fever.
It is recommendable to take the medications in the proper manner, in the way in which it is written on the packet of medication. Make sure that you are not allergic to one of them before taking them, otherwise you might develop complications.
You could also use sprays in order to get rid of the pain. Gargles could also reduce the pain, but they will not eliminate the illness. In the majority of the cases you will not need an antibiotic, but there are cases when you do.
The majority of the throat and tonsil infections are caused by viruses. Some of them are caused by bacteria though, but this can be found out only with the aid of tests. In case you have a very powerful immune system, the illness will be eliminated, regardless if the infection is caused by a virus or bacteria.
There are people who have a weak immune system and who need antibiotics in order to get rid of the infection. The problem is that the more antibiotics you take, the weaker your immune system gets. It is a vicious cycle, and because of this, it is advisable to take probiotics together with the antibiotics.
They could also upset the stomach, so you should take a medicine which will protect your stomach for the duration of the treatment.
