In the majority of the cases antibiotics are not required, but there are some people who need to take them. Usually, the infection is gone in a few days.
What is an ear infection?
An ear infection means that the middle ear in infected. The middle ear is represented by the eardrum and the space behind the eardrum. Usually, the small place behind the eardrum is filled with air.
It is connected to the back of the throat through the Eustachian tube, which is a small channel. During a cold, that space can become filled with mucus, and when that happens, the mucus has high chances of being infected by a virus or by bacteria.
There are cases when an ear infection occurs for no apparent reason, without that person suffering from a cold.
There are various common symptoms one should look for. In some of the cases people experience earaches which can be accompanied by dull hearing.
Some people also develop fever, and they could also feel sick and vomit. There are cases when the eardrum perforates, and in that case the ear will be runny, as the mucus will come out of it.
Even if it sounds very terrible, a burst eardrum will ease the pain, because the main reason for the pain is because the eardrum was too tensed.
A perforated eardrum will heal in weeks. When people have earaches, it is very possible for them to have an ear infection.
How Do We Get Rid of It?
In the majority of the cases, the ear infection will clear in 2 or 3 days. The immune system should be powerful enough to eliminate the virus or the bacteria from the body. However, in some of the cases treatment is required, the most common of the treatments being the painkillers.
The painkillers will take care of the pain, in case it gets to unbearable. A local anesthetic drug placed into the ear could also help with the pain. In some of the cases antibiotics might be required as well.
As I said, under normal circumstances, the body should be able to take care of the infection on its own. However, there are people who have a weak immune system and in those cases they need antibiotics. You should always ask your doctor’s permission in case you want to take antibiotics.
He will prescribe them only if the infection is too severe and the immunity system cannot fight against it. Also, a person who has a very weak immunity system will also be able to take antibiotics in order to take care of the problem. Antibiotics could also be prescribed in the case of children under the age of 2.
