The nose is usually “stuffy” when the lining membranes swell too much, generally because of the flu, allergies or sinus infections.
Here are 8 methods which will help you breath easily again.
1. Decongestants help relieve congestion by tightening blood vessels in the inner membranes of the nose. However, they are recommended only if you have a runny nose and other methods did not work.
Decongestants in the form of nasal sprays or drugs should not be used for more than three days in a row, as they could aggravate congestion.
2. Antihistamines reduce the amount of mucus. In any case you should bear in mind that antihistamines can cause drowsiness.
3. Nasal spray containing salt. This is one of the best ways to treat your sinusitis. The mixture of water and salt (in the nasal spray) will definitely make you breath in a better way. You should use it every evening, before going to bed.
4. A vaporizer, to increase the humidity level in the air. You should always have a vaporizer in the house when you feel that you are getting a cold. It is very practical and useful.
5. Drink plenty of fluids: water, hot tea, soup (chicken soup is great in these situations). Teas represent an effective method to get rid of sinusitis.
The ones made of thyme, juniper, pine nuts, yarrow, comfrey, chamomile and sage are the most recommended. Drink at least 3 cups a day, sweetened with honey.
6. Blow your nose correctly! Many of us do not know how to blow our noses properly! Blowing your nose may produce great troubles.
While you blow your nose, the pressure in its interior increases 7 times, unless you cough or sneeze.
Here is how to properly blow your nose:
- slightly open your mouth;
- maintain one nostril closed;
- gently blow the other nostril keeping the mouth open;
- over the nostril you have blown;
- blow the other nostril easily.
Never blow your nose with your mouth closed. Do not blow both nostrils in the same time. Also, do not blow your nose strongly, because high pressure will increase the quantity of mucus in the sinuses, reaching even the ears and creating infections.
7. Stand straight, or at least keep your head raised, as keeping your head down leads to the worsening of congestion.
8. Horseradish is an excellent natural treatment for sinusitis. It has been known as a remedy for thousands of years all over Europe and Asia. It can be used both internally and (especially) externally.
The most popular treatments using horseradish:
Horseradish cataplasms: Put in a bowl 2 tablespoons of horseradish powder and 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal. Add water and mix it until a paste is formed. Wrap the mixture in gauze and apply it on the affected area (usually on the forehead). Keep it there for as long as you can.
Grated horseradish: Wrap 2-3 teaspoons of grated horseradish in gauze and apply it on your nose and forehead. Keep it on this area until you feel your skin burning.
Horseradish applied externally can cause the irritation and redness of your skin. Protect it by applying a moisturizing cream with at least 15 minutes before the treatment.
