Make Changes to Reduce the Intake of Added Sugars

It has been recently discovered that an average American consumes around 350 calories of added sugar each day. That is the equivalent of 22 teaspoons of sugar each day.

Of course, besides the added sugar, he consumes many calories from different other sources. The majority of the added sugar comes from packaged foods and soda. Researchers believe that the global weight gain and obesity epidemic is related to the large consumption of added sugars.

Limit the Calories Obtained From Added Sugar

According to the American Heart Association, we should not consume more than 100 calories from added sugar per day. That is the equivalent of 6 teaspoons. Men should consume no more than 9 teaspoons of added sugar per day, which is around 150 calories.

That might be easier said than done, given the fact that a 12-ounce can of coda contains around 8 teaspoons of added sugar, which is 130 calories. Numerous others foods and drinks we consume contain large quantities of added sugar, and in the majority of cases we do not even know about them.

The added sugars are the ones we should worry about. What many people might not know is the fact that numerous types of foods, even salty ones contain added sugars.

For example crackers can, or most likely contain added sugars. So do cereals, and numerous other food products we might enjoy and consider healthy. Besides the added sugars, the foods might contain natural types of sugars, such as the ones found in fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and so on.

Those types of sugar are good, as they do not cause any harm to your body whatsoever.

Fruits Are Much Better Than Sweets

There are various ways through which you can reduce the added sugar intake each day. It might be difficult to get used to these changes at the beginning, but in time, you should not have any problems with them. It might be tempting to eat sweets, such as cookies or ice cream, even if you eat them as a dessert

The problem is that if you do it every day, you consume too many sugars, which in the end will cause health problems. Luckily, you can replace the sweets with different products, such as fruit.

Fruits are very delicious, and besides having a great taste, they are also much more beneficial for the health. They contain lots of antioxidants, which are excellent against cancer.

Many of the added sugars come not from the foods we consume, but from the drinks we drink. We might get a coffee without knowing that it contains hundreds of calories.

Many of us consume that type of coffee numerous times per day. Try drinking a healthier drink instead, one which does not contain so much sugar, and so many calories. You could drink a fruit seltzer drink for example.

Instead of ice-cream you could make a yogurt parfait. The flavored yogurt contains added sugar, so it is not good. Instead, you can add fruits to a simple yogurt, and it will be much healthier.
