The Cheater’s Diet – Eat Junk Food on Weekends

When it comes to losing weight, most of the diets prohibit cheating, and even if they allow it, the junk food one can consume is at a minimum level.

However, the Cheater’s Diet: Lose Weight by Taking the Weekends Off, states that cheating is the secret to losing weight. The idea behind this diet is that it matters how often you cheat and not if you do it or not.

Paul Rivas, MD, who is also a weight loss physician, believes that if you are physically active enough and eat healthy meals during the week, then you can cheat during the weekends. Cheating is allowed only on Saturday and Sunday, the rest of the days you are not allowed to cheat. Exercising is also required during the week.

During the week you will have to eat a Mediterranean-style diet. This means that you need to consume lots of proteins, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, nuts, and unsaturated fats. You can eat three times per day, but you must follow this formula: ¼ of the plate must be filled with whole grains, ¼ with proteins, and half with vegetables or fruits.

You can also snack two times per day, but the snacks must be made out of healthy foods, such as fruits, nuts, yogurt, and so on. The interesting thing about this diet is the fact that cheating is actually required.

You need to cheat during the weekends. You can eat pizza, ice cream, peanut butter, chocolate, cakes, and so on. However, you are not allowed to eat foods which trigger binges. This depends on the person: for some are chips, for others chocolate, and so on.

The Cheater’s Diet is similar to other diets which encourage lots of exercising and dieting. However, that changes during the weekend, when you need to eat “dirty” food.

Experts Bothered by Lack of Proofs

Rivas stated that the reason why cheating is required is because it increases the metabolism. By the time the weekend is over, the optimal number of calories is being burned.  When we under eat, the metabolism slows down.

The idea is to maintain a balanced number of calories during the week, and to overeat during the weekend, in order to increase the metabolism. Cheating should be controlled as well. For example you can eat a slice of pizza, not an entire pizza.

The experts stated that the diet is okay, as it encourages a healthy lifestyle. With this diet, you get to eat between 1,600 and 1,800 calories per day, which can be too much for some women, or for men who have lots of muscle mass.

The experts are against the fact that the author failed to provide proofs to back-up his claims regarding the way in which the diet works.

However, this diet could be efficient, as long as you do not exaggerate during the weekends. Since it involves lots of exercising, calories will be burnt. You could try it, and see if it is effective.
