The Grapefruit Diet is one of the oldest and most popular diets in the world. It was first introduced in the 1930s, and it is a quick and short term weight loss plan. The Grapefruit Diet involves combining grapefruit with protein, a combination which apparently accelerates weight and fat loss.
The main disadvantage of the diet is the fact that once it is stopped, the weight is regained.
The Principles of the Grapefruit Diet
Most of the versions of this diet plan promise a 10 pound loss in 12 days. People, who want to lose more weight, need to wait two days, until they can start a new cycle. In some of the versions exercises are recommended, whereas in others they aren’t.
You need to remember that this diet is a short term one, and it does not promise weight loss after the diet has been stopped.
People who follow this diet need to reduce their caloric intake, and need to eat small portions during the 3 meals of the day. They need to drink lots of water and lots of coffee.
As you can imagine, grapefruit consumption is a must, with all the meals. Half of grapefruit, or 8 ounces of grapefruit should be required with each meal.
Besides the grapefruit, dieters can consume eggs, bacon, salad, vegetables, fish, and coffee as well. Milk can be consumed as a snack, during the evening, or before bed time.
Food can be fried, and butter and salad dressing are allowed as well. You are not allowed to consume any other drink besides unsweetened grapefruit juice, water,or coffee for the duration of the diet. Snacking is only allowed after dinner.
Grapefruit Diet – Not a Good Choice, According to the Experts
The Grapefruit Diet works, but the main reason why it works is because it restricts calories to around 1,000 calories per day. It would work even without the consumption of grapefruit, and in 80 years since it was invented, no one managed to explain why grapefruit is “capable” of accelerating weight loss.
It might be because grapefruit reduces insulin levels, if grapefruit actually has any qualities whatsoever on weight loss. Grapefruit is great for the health, as it has very few calories; it has lots of Vitamin C and fiber. However, it is not a fat burner.
The diet is not recommended by many experts, because most of the weight loss comes from water. As I mentioned, once the diet is stopped, people regain the weight, as the number of calories grows.
The grapefruit Diet does not involves consuminggrapefruits which have “magical” benefits, but involves drastically reducing the number of calories.
It is not a healthy way of losing weight. If you want to lose weight in a healthy manner and on the long run, then the Grapefruit Diet should be avoided, as it isn’t suitable for the task.
In case you like grapefruit, eat it, but do not rely on it to lose weight without exercising, and eating in a healthy manner.
