Gene Tests Could Prevent Lung Cancer

A recent finding revealed a method which might increase the survival odds for the people who suffer of early stages of lung cancer. The researchers have discovered a new molecular test which can predict with a higher accuracy which of the tumors can be deadly, and thus more aggressively. The new method is more accurate and efficient than the current methods.

Study Predicts the Death Odds

The study was published in the medical journal The Lancet. The study conducted two of the largest tests son the molecular genetics of lung cancer. The patients who participated to the study were from China and North Carolina. In both of the trial groups, the researchers analyzed a 14-gene test, which was based on discoveries created by a Mountain View company. The researchers were able to predict a patient’s odds of death within five years of surgery, by analyzing the biological structure of the tumor. The discovery could be very important, as it could help people who have lung cancer make the proper decision.

They might know if they need to undergo surgery immediately, if they need to do chemo sessions, and so on. Dr. David Jablons, chief of UCSF’s thoracic oncology program, and one of the authors of the study, stated that the discovery is revolutionary, because it can help people live longer.

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the world. Almost 7 percent of the people born today will be diagnosed with lung cancer in the future. Each year, around 1.4 million people die of lung cancer worldwide.

The main problem with this type of cancer is the fact that only one third of the people who have it are diagnosed when they are in the early stages. In the case of the other types of cancers, if the disease is diagnosed from an early stage, people have 90 percent chances of surviving. In the case of the lung cancer, 45 percent of the people who were diagnosed in the early stages will die within five years from the discovery, even if the tumor was removed.

The new method analyzes the activity of the tumor, and then based on the discovery decides if the tumor is of high risk of low one. The problem is that each tumor is different, and thus, each person needs a different treatment. The new test is able to predict the likelihood of death. The test will be ready to use in the following year. Even if this test is not able to predict the development of the illness in the body, it is able to increase one’s survival odds by taking the proper treatment.
