Coffee has been considered more than just a tasting beverage for a long period of time now. For a very long period of time, people assumed that coffee might have certain health benefits, and it seems that they were right. Two new studies have revealed the fact that the odds of endometrial cancer are reduced in the case of women, if they drink several cups of coffee each day. Researchers from Harvard School of Public Health studied more than 67,000 women.
The benefits of coffee
They had the task of analyzing their health and some of their behaviors, including coffee consumption. The results of the study were published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. It seems that coffee really has a big importance when it comes to preventing certain types of cancers, one of them being endometrial cancer. This type of cancer which affects the lining of the uterus is one of the most common types of gynecological cancers in the United States of America.
According to the American Cancer Society, more than 46,000 new cases are found each year, and that each year, 8,100 women lose their life because of the disease. It seems that the majority of the women, who are diagnosed with the disease, are over the age of 50. According to Youjin Je, a nutritionist, and the leader of the Harvard study, coffee reduces the estrogen and insulin levels in the body. These two elements, the estrogen and the insulin are known for the fact that they can cause endometrial cancer. The nutritionist also stated that consuming high levels of coffee could reduce the risk of this type of cancer.
The second study revealed the fact that women who drank at least three cups of coffee each day were 35 percent less likely to be diagnosed with this type of cancer. The study involved 226,000 women who participated in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study. It spread over nine years, and the results of the study were published in the International Journal of Cancer. It seems that decaffeinated coffee had a similar effect on the women’s health, but the Harvard study revealed the fact that the effect is much stronger with regular coffee.
Pleased by the findings
Mia Gaudet, a cancer society epidemiologist stated that she is very pleased by the fact that two different studies had the same findings. The Harvard study analyzed the effects of tea are inexistent, even though tea, contains caffeine, just like coffee does. This means that the reason why coffee can be so protective is because it contains antioxidants. Previous studies have revealed the fact that coffee plays a major role against type 2 diabetes, liver cancer, Parkinson’s disease in men, and many other types of illnesses.
The researchers of the study stated that the benefits of coffee are reduced if people use too much cream or sugar, and that the best way of benefiting from it is by drinking it black. The researchers were pleased by the discovery, as women could be protected against cancerby doing something they enjoy.
