Winter is here, and so is the various health hazards associated with it. It is very important to be aware of the risk factors associated with winter. Problems can occur even with small temperature drops. British researchers discovered the fact that a 2 degrees Fahrenheit drop results in a 2 percent increase in the number of heart attacks.

Doctors stated that the elder people are in the biggest danger because they cannot regulate their body temperature in the proper manner. Strokes could also occur because of the cold, and because of the tears which might occur in the arteries.

Another danger associated with the cold temperature is the high blood pressure. The reason for that is the fact that the blood does not have enough space to flow, as there is more resistance in the blood vessels.

Problems caused by low temperatures

The low temperatures can also cause vitamin D deficiency. This can be very dangerous, because low levels of vitamin D increase the chances of developing osteoporosis, dementia, hart attacks, Parkinson’s disease, and heart diseases. The reason why the vitamin D levels are reduced during the winter is because vitamin D is mainly absorbed through the skin. Studies have revealed the fact that people who have low vitamin D levels, have twice the chances of suffering a stroke. It is very important to take vitamin D supplements in order to increase the level of this vitamin in the body. Make sure you ask the doctor about this.

Another risk associated with the winter is depression. It has been proven that people have higher chances of becoming depressed during the winter time. People might also lose their energy, put on weight, stay away from social interaction, and so on. All of these effects are caused by the so-called winter blues. The lungs can also be affected by the winter, and of course, the cold air is to blame for this problem. The main reason for this is the fact that people do not get enough exercise, and when they breathe the cold air, breathing becomes more difficult.
